I've never been a believer in any program, no matter who the developer, that promises you discrete isolations from stereo due to the obvious limitations of overlapping frequencies. Zee did play around with this a bit, and I'm not surprised to learn that there are some decent results you could probably get with a ridiculous amount of time and effort.
I think that trying to derive stems from stereo is a bit of an unnecessary holy grail. Even if you were hypothetically able to get there, mixing in 5.1 with multis is a separate artform onto itself.
