you worked with a spam amp and ran the files through a spam amp too. it seems like that would really open them up and smooth them out.

Don't know that I'd agree with "harshness".

The quality can be improved with higher FFT and overlap settings. Artifacts can be reduced with judicious use of the adjacent speaker and blend controls, and the dreaded "reverse drum" sound or "swishing" can be eliminated by first re-sampling your stereo to 88.2 or 96 KHz and running SPEC at that rate, then back to 44.1 or 48 for encoding (cd, and DVD) or leave it 96 for AVCHD encoding.

We've also found that "less is usually more" when it comes to additional processing, but yeah, feel free to experiment. There are "spam emulation" and "tape saturation" VSTs, meant to give audio the sound of vintage gear from the 60's and 70's.
