I came across the SurroundByUs website when I was looking for a way to rip my DTS CD to iTunes so I could play it on my AppleTV2. Although I'd bought DTS CDs, I never listened to them since they weren't a part of my digital collection. I read the tutorial about playing DTS via iTunes and although that only worked for the 1st gen AppleTV, it gave me an idea - I'd been using Handbrake for some time to convert my DVDs to iTunes format w/an AC3 soundtrack, so I thought why not try using Audiomuxer to convert DTS WAV to AC3, mux it to MKV, and then convert over to M4V using Handbrake (it's not as painful as it sounds!). So anyways, I just wanted to state that it's possible (I'd googled around for hours trying to see if anyone had actually accomplished this) and although it's not actually DTS (it's DTS converted to AC3) it definitely works and it sounds absolutely incredible!! For the video track, I add a high res album cover image for the movie artwork in iTunes and/or 16:9 1920x1080 artist image for the video track and the resulting m4v file can be added to iTunes and played on AppleTV2. Anyways, my next step is learning to go from stereo to surround, looking forward to learning more from all of you.... |

Wow, that does sound like the long way around but if it works for you great. Just be aware that dts (on cd's and DVDs, vs. DTS-HD MA) is lossy so you are decoding a lossy compression scheme (DTS) and then re-encoding with another lossy compression scheme (AC3). Again, if it sounds good to you then fine. I have an Apple TV rev 2. I'm surprised I don't have a guide posted here. Perhaps I started and didn't finish Anyway, Welcome aboard! The problem is iTunes music is ALWAYS 44.1 Khz and Apple TV (rev 2 and above) is ALWAYS 48 KHz. You can play stereo from iTunes on Apple TV via AirPlay, but what is happening is Apple TV is resampling on the fly to 48 Khz. Resampling (or any non "bit perfect" audio process) will break the DTS encoding and your AVR will think it's stereo and you'll get a blast of white noise instead of surround music. This means you can't stream DTS encoded audio (from a DTS CD) via iTunes/AirPlay with Apple TV. You have to have an AirPort Express for that. |
