All the surround conversions I've done have ultimately been run through Surcode DTS Pro for both CD's & DVD's. I've yet to try DVD-Audio even though I certainly have play back capability. I'm have little interest right now in trying that however...

In the multiple options of audio for DVD Video there is one for LPCM at 16/48. Since most all of what I work with originates as 16bit 44/48 (edited & effected of course at 32bit float) I don't feel drawn much to the higher rates available for DVD Audio.

Can anyone advise me on the proper audio file format & other DVD authoring aspects to accomplish 5.1 LPCM on DVD?

Thanks in advance!

Scott in real life.

Scott,

We have a format expert who can give you a great deal of insight into this whole area. He's in Europe, so hopefully he will have some time tomorrow to answer your excellent question.

It's true that DVD-A supports higher bit rates, but it also supports lower bit rates such as 24bit 44,100 Hz. This is great because it allows you to go from 16bit 44100 to 24bit 44100 without ever upsampling or even dithering. Plogue even automatically increases the bit depth to 32bit for more accurate processing, then allows you to record at 24bit. That's how I work and I usually end up putting two or three albums (in compressed MLP format) on a single DVD5, which is very convenient for my car player.

JorgeLuiz,

You might want to read this: . It might be a bit dated (2004) but it probably still applies to what you're asking.

Sonik wiz,
you could author 24/48 2ch LPCM using DVDLab?
cool, i forgot one detail in my post: i want one authoring program that can handle 5.1 24 bits and DVDLab can't do that, 5.1 only in 16 bits.

answering few questions:
A.Auditon is 32bit float capable, the multichannel encoder can export multichannels waves or in seperateds channels.(16,24 and 32 float)
the same with Plogue, is just a question of few adjusts in the 'audio recorder'(16,24,32 float and multichannel mono, stereo, seperateds channels, etc.)
to tell the true, i do more encodes with Audition than with Plogue....now i'm back to deal with Plogue, blame SPEC.

i'm doing lots of tests for size/formats in lossless.
my target is to use only 5.1 lossless in HD, maybe i'll left to burn medias.
i'm checking sizes between 5.1 MLP and .flacs.
.flac is easy to deal!

i'm searching one player 24/88.2 .flac capable, winamp and VLC don't work. if anyone of you know, please tell me! ;)

i think that is better upsample from 44.1k to 88.2k than to 96k but deserve more tests as i'm not convinced if have or not audibles differences.

cheers!
