My humor is oblique and often misunderstood. Most times it is tongue-in-cheek, self-deprecatory, my avatar being a good example. I try not to come across as a rather common anatomical part, one which the world apparently has an abundance of as well.

Simply and appropriately put, I really like this forum. And the enthusiasm shown by our members is infectious.

And respond quickly? Oh, my goodness, a big Yes on that one. But quick is one thing; their responses are completely no nonsense - none of that "try and see if it works" stuff. What you guys have done is given me so much that I really need some time to digest it all. And wouldn't life be just lovely if we could totally focus on one thing.

Thanks for enduring my humor.

All the best,

IncurableGeek :ugeek: (me without the goatee)

You'll have to excuse me if I lean on you guys a bit. The problem is that I trust you as having no hidden agenda.

What I am doing: Finishing configuration of 6-core and 4-core so I can actually work, my area of expertise being in the design of educational materials based on math and logic for eventual embedding in interactive video games. Audophilia is for me like the love of a good woman, without which what is the meaning of work? In short, I have extremely good ears (a gift), read a lot, but am completely new to this whole 5.1 surround sound thing. Should have computer system, electrical wiring (don't wish to blow up the house so gotta move some amps around), etc. all set up in a week so I can begin playing with all that you have taught me.

On the MediaMonkey site, there is a fellow from Serbia by the name of Peke who wrote me, "I would suggest that you play FLAC off the HDD as personally Simulated/Guessed 5.1 from stereo is not quality enough for me (Hardware upscale is better but not perfect) and thus I sent these samples for testing. They use Cloned Surround technique which most audiophiles prefer."

(Note: His English is very good but often double-negative convoluted. What I believe he is saying is that "Cloned Surround technique" is superior to "Simulated/Guessed 5.1" - whatever the hey that means!)

I'm sure he has good intentions but I also from his website glean that he has some commercial motivations as well. Request: Can someone please translate his above statement so that I can understand it. I am not a mixer or sound-room guy. But, then, I have realized that I know a whole lot about a lot of things but not deep enough about anything except education to suite my OCD needs.

Btw, I believe this site accepts donations. If so, please let me know the procedure. I am not rich, used to be and will be again (such is life), but I owe you something for all my requests for help.

Thanks,

IG :geek:

Why not listen to the examples here:

viewforum.php?f=19

and compare them to the (freely down loadable) stereo?

If you like what you hear and are willing to put some time and money into doing the same yourself, you're in the right place.

If you don't like it, you've found out before investing.

Our agenda is simply to help people that want to convert Stereo to Surround for their listening pleasure. It's a hobby, nothing more.

Well, I don't understand much of what he's trying to say, and the fact that I'm also not a native English speaker doesn't help much either, but anyway, I *think* that what he means is that you should not mess with stereo to try to make it 5.1, because according to him it will not sound good. However, I believe he's wrong. :)
And what he says about hardware upmixing to 5.1 which should be better than using software, is nonsense. That's where most of us come from. In fact, that's what we were doing before we started doing it this way. Must be a reason for that, eh? ;)

A Google search for 'Cloned Surround (technique)' didn't give me much results related to music, except maybe for this one: http://techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=63195 so I've no idea what that's all about. Maybe you could ask him to tell a bit more about it? If he really meant what is talked about in that thread than it's save to assume that it's not better. Looks like yet another variety of Dolby Prologic, Creative Neo, Circle Surround etc. Can't imagine it will be much better than these.

what is it that opinions are supposed to be like that everyone has? ;) ;)

there are a lot of very bad ways to go from stereo-to-surround out there, and a lot of people who have heard the results coming from those methods. i don't doubt for a second that many of those ARE inferior to either hardware decoding, pressing the "surround" button on the receiver, etc. however, folks who make comments like that are stuck on that sort of older method of achieving surround and have simply not realized that the technology has drastically improved. turn over any rock on the internet and you're bound to find someone who'll want to talk first and learn later. :)
