i'm registered in one interesting forum where they are starting to do stereo from mono.
have good examples posted to hear online, some have very good seperations.

I follow the development of the separation techniques and definition between 2 channels from Mono to obtain better 5.1 in the future.

i'm testing programs like PhotoSound and Spear trying to do the same.

I am not sufficient eloquente to formulate techniques questions in english as is not my mother language but hearing some samples was a good surprise.

it'd be interesting to see if, going from mono to psuedo-stereo, they'd be able to get a better soundfield than what early stereo mixes, like some Beatles' albums, give us.

then again, I know Zeerround's tried a few ways of doing this, and we concluded that, at that moment, we weren't getting anywhere. still worth revisiting, or learning from what others are doing.

It's pretty clear that spectral editing will be the next big thing in audio production. At first it will be expensive, manually intensive, and require high end computers. Overtime all of those will be mitigated, but I'd guess another 2 to 4 years before you can push a button and extract instruments from existing mixes (without a lot of manual intervention) in a consumer class product. Yes I have seen all the demos, overtones are the current problem ;)

FYI, for just for looking at notes in spectorgrams, foobar does a really nice job (is there anything foobar can't do?).

View --> visualizations --> spectrogram.

Then right click in the spectrogram window for options like "full screen". Mesmerizing to watch in real time with the music.

I had tried Photosounder about 6 months ago and was not too impressed ... To me it seems more of a Toy than an actual editor, but it's still improving.

I'll try the Spear app as it looks more promising. (Hadn't seen it before!)

IMO: Spectral Editing and EQ Band-Passing/Filtering are really the only practical ways to make good pseudo-stereo out of mono with any sort of 'isolation' of an instrument, or to achieve a sense of discreteness between the L/R channels, but there are also good techniques used that simply pull the ambient information from the mono source and spread it throughout the wider ranges of the L/R channels, or even to the rears ... (the ambience is usually by way of impulse response processing, but it's a time-intensive process with lots of trial and error to get a good result).

I had recently started re-visiting some of my mono-to-surround projects done in .bidule and hope to re-work some newer ideas into a .bidule layout sometime in the first quarter of next year.

hey, I am up a little late but I like the Idea that knowing what makes good stereo will in turn help to create good 3D but there is also a fourth dimemsion, it's time signature.. while low pass and high pass filters had helped to create good car stereo images. listening to one of PBTHAL's vinyl rips at 24 / 192. "Actually heard this" I thought the needle had sctratch the record (**) well just heard my first Jimmy Hendrix.. and I'm off to bed.. hopefully the computer will be able to hear musical instruments rather than just record frequency's..
