I have a bunch of files I converted to AC3. Some play as multichannel thru my stereo and I have others that only play as 2 channel stereo. Anyone know of a reason for this?

Could you be more specific as to how you converted them and how you are playing them back?

I used AudioMuxer to convert files to AC3. I play them back thru optical spdif connect to my stereo. As I said most of them play as multichannel and some of them play as stereo.

Audiomuxer doesn't change stereo to multichannel. If you start with a stereo file you'll get 2ch ac3. If you start with a multi-ch audio file you'll get multi-channel ac3.

If you want to convert stereo you need to use a tool like Spec, also hosted here.

Thanks, I have been using Cirlinca HD-Audio Solo also, so I was probably using switching between the two programs thinking they both made multichannel AC3s.

OK,

FYI, the "upmix" capability we have here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=266 sounds a LOT better than the "VI" method in Cirlinca. You might want to check it out.

Cheers,
Z

I got to looking at the AC3 files. I took five 2 channel flac files and ran them through audiomuxer and then I compared them using my stereo. The originals show as 2 channel when they are played, but the ones I audiomuxed to AC3 play as 5.1 channels. Nothing was changed in the setup except for playing the files.

Hmmm

I just verified that the files are indeed 2 ch AC3 files (given a stereo input).

Your "stereo" must be doing something like dolby pro logic to upmix to 5.0 or 5.1 on the fly.

Again, for the best "upmix" results, we recommend using SPEC (see above URL) hosted on this site.

Yeah it seems like a lot of work (at first) but the results are worth it.
