The technically correct answer is, the .1 channel in 5.1 surround is not meant for music and most surround music producers suggest you don't use it.
The issue is that since you don't know the user's setup, as per bass management, room setup, etc., It's conceivable that by ADDING additional bass in the LFE channel, on top of what is already in the other 5 channels, it could destructively add (bass goes away) or make the bass too boomy in the listener's environment.

However, in practice:
a) People "like" to see the Sub/LFE indicator light up when they are listening to surround. In fact most people expect it.
b) Since what we do here is for your own system, you are in complete control, so do what makes you happy
c) As much as it's technically wrong, goosing the the bass a little with our newer LFE tools sounds good
