hi folks,

i'm looking for discussions on this topic (searched here and on the net with no luck).

i assume that the 5.0 faction wants to let the listeners surround setup determine what should be done with low frequencies. if the discussion is as simple as this, i agree with the 5.0 folks.

any ideas, links, flames?

best to all,

peter

I add a .1, but I keep it at about -10 dbs from the fronts.

That's a taste of each person, there will be who loves your LFE channel, personally if I use it with a plugin Voxengo BMS to spam some time. Regards

Saludos a todos Great Post ;)

The technically correct answer is, the .1 channel in 5.1 surround is not meant for music and most surround music producers suggest you don't use it.

The issue is that since you don't know the user's setup, as per bass management, room setup, etc., It's conceivable that by ADDING additional bass in the LFE channel, on top of what is already in the other 5 channels, it could destructively add (bass goes away) or make the bass too boomy in the listener's environment.

On past forums I wave posted links to the technical discussion.

However, in practice:

a) People "like" to see the Sub/LFE indicator light up when they are listening to surround. In fact most people expect it.

b) Since what we do here is for your own system, you are in complete control, so do what makes you happy

c) As much as it's technically wrong, goosing the the bass a little with our newer LFE tools sounds good ;-)

The IMO correct answer is :
Mix the 2 stereo sides into one and place that whole file into the LFE......

The subwoofer is set by your HTS , but when you use spam connections, you won't have one when it's 5.0 at all !
This way the crosover (or at what point the subwoofer is giving signal) is determined by the HTS and the volume
will also never be a problem when you keep the levels the same as the stereo........

Problem fixed, this method works on DTS, AC3 and DVDA without the usual problems of too low, or too high or different
crossovers on different systems.............. (and nice side effect...nothing is changed, so there is not more nor less bass
than in the original).

Yes! I like this very much. This "lets the playback system do the work." Nice.

That's essentially what the LFE in SPEC does, except it allows you to tailer the sound a little.

The problem with tailoring the sound is that you always use your own reference. unless you have a completely neutraly tuned monitoring system, you're going to bias the sound. I'm all for pulling everything apart and spreading over 5 channels, but i like to leave the overall eq alone.

on the other hand, i haven't heard any of your remixes Z. ;-]
