I can get it to install but it will not open.......This has never happened before...always worked....no error message, updated to Net 4.5.1..Just will not open |

Hi, converting 5.1 48 kHz 24 bit FLAC to "Mono Wavs" produces 16 bit files - why? ("Bit Depth to" unchecked which I assume should handle the file's bitdepth "as is", right?) Doing the same with original 5.1 TrueHD file produces 16 bit WAVs as well. It's interesting that during conversion the temp files report as 24 bit files but once the conversion is finished, they are 16 bit. If I force it ("Bit Depth to" checked and set to 24) the output files ARE 24 bit however the content is apparently 16 bit only (although in 24 bit container). |

Pl4yitLOUD! is the expert on this, but while we're waiting for him is it possible that the TrueHD content was really 16bits, so everything that came from it was also 16bits? Sorry I'm less familiar with the various Dolby technologies than DTS. |

I made some tests and I think I know what is happening. Apparently eac3to (which you use) spam the audio for bit-depth and if it decides audio is 16bit then it automatically(!) changes the original bit-depth (as seen in logfile) which is a very bad approach. On the other hand J River Media Centre (where I converted original TrueHD track to FLAC) preserves the original bit-depth no matter what which is the correct approach. I tested with real 24bit files (audio processed by 24bit plugin) converted to 5.1 FLAC - this one converted to mono waws preserved 24 bit-depth correctly, so it seems eac3to does a decent job in spam the real used bit-depth, nevertheless I still would very much prefer it to let ME decide whether to changed bit-depth or not. I would rather spam the audio myself and decide what to do about the bit-depth in the end (and eventually involve proper dithering process). In other words there should be an option in eac3to "don't mess with bit-depth" e.g. keep the original. |
